About the Role
Jay's is looking for a high-caliber, high-producing Controller to own the financial heartbeat of our company. You'll own financial reporting and oversee the team members who handle payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and human resources across our North Carolina and Virginia locations, and you'll serve as the trusted right-hand to ownership, building the financial planning, forecasting, and reporting that drive smart decisions and fuel our growth. This is a leadership role, not a data-entry role. If you love clean books, on-time closes, developing a strong team, and being the person leadership trusts most, this is your seat.
Pay: Salary range: $90K - $130K, plus bonuses (D.O.E.)

Key Responsibilities
- Own the month-end and year-end close; deliver accurate P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements on time, every month
- Produce department-level financials (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Sewer) and track gross margin, overhead, and net profit against budget
- Serve as a strategic thought partner to ownership, building the financial infrastructure for sustained growth across all trades and locations
- Build and manage the annual budget, forecasts, and cash management; advise ownership on pricing, capital purchases, and growth decisions
- Analyze key business drivers, trends, and KPIs, and present results to leadership in a clear, easy-to-understand format
- Stay current on industry trends, competitive pressures, and opportunities in the home services market
- Accounts Payable: oversee the AP team to ensure vendor and distributor invoices are processed accurately, statements are reconciled, and early-pay discounts are captured
- Accounts Receivable: oversee the AR team's invoicing, collections, financing-partner funding, and membership/service agreement billing
- Payroll: oversee the payroll team to ensure accurate, on-time payroll for NC and VA employees, including technician commissions, spiffs, performance pay, and bonuses
- Human Resources: oversee the HR team to ensure consistent, streamlined recruiting, onboarding, benefits and 401(k) administration, workers' comp, employee files, I-9 compliance, and the employee handbook
- Oversee job costing and the ServiceTitan-to-accounting integration so labor, materials, and equipment are tied to every job
- Review and approve bank, credit card, and loan reconciliations; manage relationships with our bank, CPA, insurance, and benefits providers
- Coordinate with our outside CPA on tax planning, preparation, and reporting; ensure state and federal income tax, sales tax, payroll tax, and 1099 filings are accurate and current
- Establish and enforce internal controls that protect company assets
- Lead and develop the AP, AR, payroll, and HR team members: set priorities and objectives, hold them accountable to KPIs, conduct effective one-on-ones, and provide ongoing guidance and feedback
- Shape company culture by modeling our core values, especially ethics and integrity
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager
- Strong background in full-cycle accounting and financial statement preparation, with experience overseeing AP, AR, and payroll functions
- Experience supervising multi-state payroll (NCVA) and HR functions
- In-depth understanding of debit and credit accounting, GAAP, internal controls, and tax compliance
- Extensive quantitative and qualitative financial analysis skills, with the ability to distill the important numbers into a strategic view of performance
- Strong communication skills; able to present complex financial information to leaders clearly
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (advanced Excel) and accounting software (QuickBooks or similar)
- Proven success training and developing people
Preferred
- CPA or CMA certification
- Accounting experience in the home services, construction, or trades industry
- Experience with ServiceTitan and QuickBooks
- Familiarity with Nexstar Network financial best practices
- SHRM-CP or PHR certification, or HR management experience
